We help New Zealanders work out who should be supplying their power, without an account, a phone call or a sales pitch.

Why this exists

Switching power company is one of the easiest ways to cut a household bill in New Zealand, and almost nobody does it. The reason is not laziness — it is that comparing power is genuinely annoying. Prices depend on which lines network your street sits on, whether you are a low or standard user, and what kind of meter is on your wall. None of that is information people carry around in their heads.

So most comparison ends the same way: a form, an account, a phone call, and a nagging sense that the answer was decided before you started.

We wanted something that respects the person using it. Ask the smallest number of questions that produce a real answer. Show the results before asking for anything. Say plainly who pays us. Never claim to have searched a market we have not searched.

What we cover

We compare 8 power companies — the companies we work with. New Zealand has around 30 electricity retailers, so this is not the entire market, and we would rather tell you that up front than have you assume otherwise. Between them, the companies we list supply the large majority of New Zealand households.

We cover electricity and mains gas. If your home is on reticulated gas, the comparison takes that into account, because splitting the two rarely works out cheaper.

How we work

  • No account, ever. You do not sign up to see results. There is no wall.
  • Facts get checked. Everything on a company's page is verified against that company's own website. Anything we cannot confirm is left blank rather than guessed at.
  • We say who pays us. Some of the companies we list pay us a commission, and we decide which ones we promote. How we compare sets out what we are paid and what for.
  • No fake urgency. Nobody is "also viewing this deal". There is no countdown.
  • No tracking pixels. The site currently loads no third-party JavaScript at all — no analytics scripts, no advertising tags, no social embeds.

Where we're up to

We are early, and we would rather be straight about it than pretend otherwise. Right now we compare companies on their offers — sign-up credits, contract terms, exit fees, gas and prepay availability, bundles, and how their electricity is generated.

We do not yet show dollar prices. Rate files are coming from the companies directly, and pricing switches on once we hold enough of them for the comparison to mean something. A price for one company and a blank for the rest is not a comparison.
