Terms of use
Last updated 27 July 2026
These terms apply to your use of comparepower.co.nz ("the site"), operated by ComparePower.co.nz ("we", "us"). By using the site you agree to them. If you do not, please do not use the site.
1. What the service is
The site is an information and comparison service. We show you what 8 power companies offer and, if you ask, put you in touch with one of them.
We are not:
- an electricity or gas retailer;
- a party to any contract you enter with a power company;
- a provider of financial, legal or energy advice.
Any contract for supply is between you and the power company, on their terms. We have no role in it once you sign up.
2. We don't cover the whole market
We compare 8 power companies. New Zealand has roughly 30 electricity retailers, so there are options we do not show you, and there may be a better deal among them. We say this clearly rather than leaving you to assume otherwise, and how we compare sets out the full picture.
3. Accuracy
We check what we publish against each company's own website, and we leave a field blank rather than guess at it. Even so, offers and terms change, sometimes without notice.
Always confirm the details directly with the power company before you commit to anything. We provide the information as it stands and do not warrant that it is complete, current or error-free. See the disclaimer for the detail.
4. How results are ordered
Some of the companies we list pay us a commission, and more may do so over time. We decide which companies we promote, and promotion is a paid commercial arrangement rather than a judgement about which company is better. You can change the sort at any time, and doing so genuinely re-orders the list. Our methodology explains this in full.
5. Using the site
You agree not to:
- submit false details, or someone else's details without their permission;
- scrape, harvest or systematically copy the site's content for a competing service;
- attempt to interfere with the site, or gain access to any part of it you shouldn't;
- use the site for anything unlawful.
6. Quote requests
If you request a quote you are asking us to pass your name, email, phone and address to a power company so they can contact you. You confirm the details are yours and are correct. Our privacy policy covers what happens to them.
7. Content and intellectual property
The site's text, layout and design belong to us. Company names, logos and trade marks belong to their owners and are used to identify the companies we compare.
8. Links to other sites
We link to power companies and other third parties. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, their terms or what they do with your information.
9. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the site or from a decision you make based on it — including where information turns out to be inaccurate or out of date.
Nothing in these terms limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 where those Acts apply and cannot be excluded.
10. Availability
We aim to keep the site available but do not guarantee it. We may change, suspend or withdraw any part of it at any time.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows when they last changed, and continuing to use the site means you accept the current version.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.
