How many power companies do you compare?
8 — Contact Energy, Genesis Energy, Mercury, Meridian Energy, Powershop, Nova Energy, Pulse Energy, Electric Kiwi. New Zealand has roughly 30 electricity retailers, so this is the set we work with rather than the full market. We say who we cover so you can decide whether to look further.
Why is Trustpower not on this list?
Trustpower no longer sells electricity under its own name. Mercury acquired its retail customer book, so Mercury is the company you would actually be signing up with. Listing Trustpower separately would send you somewhere that no longer exists.
Why is Frank Energy not on this list?
Frank Energy is closing down, so it cannot take on new customers. We would rather leave it off than send you to a retailer that has to hand you back.
Which power companies supply mains gas?
5 of the 8 we compare have confirmed piped natural gas for households: Contact Energy, Genesis Energy, Mercury, Nova Energy, Pulse Energy. Where a company's page says gas is not confirmed, it means we could not verify it on their own site — not that they definitely do not sell it. There is no mains gas network in the South Island at all.
Why don't you show power prices on these pages?
Electricity is priced per network region, per user type and per meter configuration, so one company can have several hundred different prices depending on your address and your meter. We are collecting rate files directly from the companies rather than estimating, and we would rather show nothing than a number we cannot stand behind.
What order are these companies listed in?
The order is "Featured, then market share". Featured companies are commercially placed and carry a Featured badge, so you can see which ones they are. Everyone else follows by market share — how many New Zealand homes they supply — because that is a fact rather than an opinion. How we compare sets out the arrangement in full.
