Privacy policy

This policy explains what ComparePower.co.nz does with your information. It is written under thePrivacy Act 2020, and we have tried to write it so it is actually readable.

The short version

• Browsing the site collects nothing about you personally.
• We do not run analytics, advertising tags or social tracking scripts.
• We only get your personal details if you type them into a form and submit it.
• If you request a quote, we pass your details to a power company so they can contact you. That is the point of the form, and it is the main thing to understand here.
• You can ask us what we hold, correct it, or have it deleted.

What we collect

When you request a quote or contact us

We collect what you type in:

• Your name
• Your email address
• Your phone number
• Your street address

We also record where you arrived from — the referring website, and any campaign tags in the link you clicked — so we know which of our pages are useful.

Your comparison answers

The questions the comparison asks — your town, roughly how much power you use, your meter type, whether you have gas, solar or an electric vehicle — are stored in your browser only, so you can go back a step and so your results survive a refresh. They are cleared when you close the tab. They are not sent to us, and they are not included in a quote request.

Where you came from

If you arrive from an advertisement or a campaign link, the tags in that link are saved in your browser's local storage so that, if you later request a quote, we can tell which campaign it came from. Nothing is transmitted unless you submit a form.

Server logs

Our host, Cloudflare, keeps standard technical logs of requests — IP address, browser type, page requested, timestamp. We use these to keep the site running and secure. We do not use them to build a profile of you.

Cookies and tracking

We do not set any cookies. The site uses your browser's local storage and session storage, described above, which stay on your device.

The site loads no third-party JavaScript — no Google Analytics, no advertising pixels, no social media embeds, no chat widgets. If that changes we will update this page and say so.

Who we share it with

When you request a quote or send us your details, they go to:

• A power company. The reason you filled in the form. They contact you about switching, and from that point their own privacy policy applies to what they hold.
• Our lead handling and email systems. We use standard third-party services to store enquiries and send email. They process the information on our instructions and nothing more.

We do not sell your personal information to data brokers, advertisers or anyone else who is not handling your enquiry.

Where it is stored

Some of the services we use store data on servers outside New Zealand. Where that happens, we take reasonable steps to ensure comparable protections apply, as required by the Privacy Act.

How long we keep it

Enquiries are kept while they are useful for the purpose you gave them to us — following up, and keeping a record of what we passed on and to whom. When they are no longer needed we delete or anonymise them. You can ask us to delete yours sooner.

Your rights

Under the Privacy Act 2020 you can:

• Ask what we hold about you, and get a copy;
• Ask us to correct it if it is wrong;
• Ask us to delete it;
• Unsubscribe from any email we send — every one has a link.

Email hello@comparepower.co.nz and we will respond within 20 working days, which is what the Act requires.

If you are not happy with how we handled it, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner.

Children

This site is intended for adults arranging power for a household. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS and submissions are encrypted in transit. No system is perfectly secure, but we keep what we collect deliberately small — which is the most effective protection available.

Changes

If we change this policy we will update the date at the top. Material changes — particularly anything that adds tracking or new sharing — will be called out plainly rather than slipped in.
