We don't compare the whole market

We compare 8 power companies: Contact Energy, Genesis Energy, Mercury, Meridian Energy, Powershop, Nova Energy, Pulse Energy, Electric Kiwi. New Zealand has roughly 30 electricity retailers. There may be a cheaper or better-suited option we do not list, and nothing on this site should be read as a claim that we have searched the market.

Where we describe something as the best or cheapest, that is scoped to the companies we compare and to the sort you have applied — never to New Zealand as a whole.

We earn money from some of the companies we list

Electric Kiwi pays us a commission when someone signs up through our link, and more of the companies we list may do so over time. We decide which companies we promote, and promotion is a paid commercial arrangement rather than a judgement that one company is better than another. You can re-sort the list at any time and it genuinely re-orders.

This is not advice

Everything here is general information. It does not take your particular circumstances into account and it is not financial, legal or energy advice. What is right for your household depends on things we do not know about you.

Information can be out of date

We check each company's details against their own website and leave a field blank rather than guess at it. Offers, credits, contract terms and exit fees still change without notice.

Confirm everything with the power company before you sign up. Their terms are the ones that bind you, not our summary of them.

We don't show prices yet

The site currently shows no dollar prices for power plans, and does not estimate what you would pay. Electricity is priced by network region, user type and meter configuration, which means one company can have several hundred different prices. We are collecting rate files from the companies directly and will show pricing when we hold enough of them for the comparison to be meaningful.

Sign-up credits and exit fees shown on result cards are offer amounts published by the company. They are not a price, and they do not tell you what your power will cost.

Outages

We are not an outage service and we do not hold live network status. In a power cut, contact your lines company — the network that owns the poles and wires in your street, named on your bill — not your power company. If you can see a downed line, call 111 and keep well away from it.

We link out to power companies and other organisations. We are not responsible for their content, their offers or their handling of your information.
