Where do you live?

Power is priced by the lines network your home sits on, so this is the one thing we genuinely need.

We use this to work out which lines network you're on — that's what power prices are set by.

Only needed if you ask for a quote. It saves you typing it again later.

Roughly how much power does your household use?

A rough band is enough. If you have a bill handy it will show your usage in kWh.

What kind of meter do you have?

We cannot look this up from your address, so this one is worth a guess at worst. If you are not sure, say so and we will compare on a standard meter.

Do you have mains gas?

Piped gas, not bottles. There is no mains gas network in the South Island.

Are you open to switching your broadband as well?

Companies that sell both usually discount power and broadband when you take them together — so it is where the extra saving is, if you are not tied to your current provider.

How the comparison works

    You tell us where you are

    Power is priced by the lines network your home sits on, so your town or suburb is the one thing we genuinely need. We show you which network we worked out, so you can correct it.

  2. Step 2

    And how you use power

    Roughly how much you use, what meter you have, and whether you want gas too. "Not sure" is an answer to all three.

  3. Step 3

    We compare what we can verify

    Sign-up offers, contract terms, exit fees, gas, bundles and generation — each checked against the company's own site and dated.

  4. Step 4

    You choose what happens next

    Sign up directly with a company, or ask us for a quote and we pass your details to a power company. Nothing happens automatically.

Comparing power companies — common questions

How long does comparing power companies take?

About a minute. We ask for your town or suburb, roughly how much power you use, what kind of meter you have, and whether you want gas as well. There is no account to create and nothing to pay.

Do I need my power bill to compare?

No. It helps — your bill tells you your usage in kWh and which lines company you are on — but "not sure" is an answer to every question your bill would settle, and the comparison still works without it.

Why do you ask for my town rather than my address?

Because electricity is priced by the lines network your home sits on, and your town or suburb is enough to work that out for most of the country. Where a suburb straddles two networks we ask you which one you are on instead of guessing.

Which power companies do you compare?

8: Contact Energy, Genesis Energy, Mercury, Meridian Energy, Powershop, Nova Energy, Pulse Energy, Electric Kiwi. New Zealand has roughly 30 electricity retailers, so this is the set we work with rather than the full market.

Is it actually free?

Yes. You are never charged. We are paid a commission by companies we partner with when someone signs up through our link, and we are paid for quote requests we pass on. Neither costs you anything and we tell you which companies pay us.

Will you tell me which company is cheapest?

Not yet, and we would rather say so. Electricity is priced per network region, per user type and per meter configuration, so a single company can have hundreds of different prices. We are collecting rate files directly from the companies instead of estimating. Until then we compare on offers and features we have verified.

Will you sign me up automatically?

No. Nothing happens without you choosing it. If you ask for a quote we pass your contact details and address to a power company so they can talk to you; if you use a sign-up link you go to that company's own website and sign up with them.
