Power and broadband bundles in New Zealand

A bundle is only worth it if both halves are competitive on their own. Here is who sells both, and the arithmetic that tells you whether the discount is real.

What we can show you

Broadband across the 8 companies we compare

A bundle is only a bundle if the company sells both. This is who we have confirmed sells broadband alongside power.

"Not confirmed" means we could not verify it on the company's own website. It is not the same as "no", and we would rather show the gap than fill it.

A single bill for power and internet is genuinely convenient, and the discount attached to it is usually real. Whether the bundle is cheaper is a different question, and it has a straightforward answer that almost nobody works out.

Who sells both

The table above is what we have verified across the 8 companies we compare, read off their own sites. Broadband is one of the fields we track precisely because it changes which comparison you should be doing.

The arithmetic

  1. Price the bundle. One quote, both products, discount applied, for your actual power usage and the broadband tier you actually want.
  2. Price them apart. The best power deal for your usage, plus the best broadband deal from a dedicated provider.
  3. Compare the totals over twelve months. Include any sign-up credit on either side, and any installation or router cost.

If the bundle wins, take it. It often does. But the failure mode is specific and common: a bundle discount applied to a power plan that was not competitive to begin with. Power is the larger bill in most New Zealand households, so a few cents per kilowatt hour outweighs a broadband discount quickly.

What a bundle costs you beyond money

Narrower broadband choice. A power company selling broadband is generally reselling someone else's network rather than running its own, so it carries fewer plans and tiers than a specialist. If you want a specific fibre tier, static IP or a particular router, check before assuming.

Harder to leave. Two products with one company is one decision instead of two, and if either half has a term commitment, the exit calculation covers both. Bundles are stickier than the sum of their parts, which is the point of them from the seller's side.

Support that spans two problems. Some people find one number for everything easier. Others find that an outage conversation and a billing conversation get routed to the same queue.

Where we are

We do not publish rates for power or broadband here. We have no verified rate files for electricity yet, and broadband pricing is a different vertical with its own data. What this page can do honestly is tell you which of the 8 companies we compare sell both, what else we have verified about each of them, and send you for a written quote you can hold them to.

If you are comparing power on its own first, that is the right order: get the electricity half right and then see whether adding broadband improves it.

Power and broadband bundles — common questions

Which power companies offer broadband in New Zealand?

Several of the companies we compare sell broadband alongside electricity, and the table on this page shows which ones we have confirmed from their own websites. Where a row reads not confirmed, that is a gap in our data rather than a statement that they do not.

Is bundling power and broadband cheaper?

It can be, and the discount is usually real. Whether it is a saving overall depends on whether the underlying rates are competitive. A bundle discount applied to an expensive power plan can still cost more than two good separate deals. Price both ways using your actual usage.

What is the catch with power and broadband bundles?

Two things. The broadband is usually resold rather than the company's own network, so the plan choice is narrower than a dedicated internet provider's. And leaving becomes a two-product decision, which is harder, especially if either half has a term commitment.

Does bundling affect my broadband speed?

Not by itself. Broadband speed is a property of the connection type and the plan — fibre, and which fibre tier — rather than of who bills you. What a bundle can limit is which tiers are on offer, since a power company reselling broadband typically carries fewer options than a specialist.

Can I bundle power, gas and broadband together?

Some companies sell all three. The same test applies and gets harder with each fuel added. Price the bundle against the best available deal on each product separately, using your real usage, and compare the totals rather than the advertised discount.
