Solar grants and subsidies in New Zealand

"Solar power government subsidy NZ" is one of the most searched solar phrases in the country. The honest answer is short, and it is genuinely hard to find stated plainly, because the pages that rank for it mostly belong to people who would rather talk about something else.

There is no national subsidy for household solar panels

New Zealand does not run a national grant, rebate or feed-in subsidy for residential solar installations. Not a reduced one, not a means-tested one. If you are budgeting for a system, budget for the whole thing.

This differs from several countries people compare against, which is where the expectation usually comes from.

What public funding does cover

Warmer Kiwi Homes is the government programme most often confused with a solar subsidy. It funds insulation and efficient heating for eligible households, and it is substantial and worth checking on its own merits, but it does not fund panels.

That is not a consolation prize. For a cold, poorly insulated New Zealand house, insulation usually does more per dollar for both comfort and running cost than generation does, and it does it in winter, when solar output is at its lowest and heating demand is at its highest. If you qualify and the house is under-insulated, that is the better first move, and it makes any later solar decision cleaner.

Local schemes exist and they move

Some councils have run rates-based financing for home improvements including solar. The cost is spread across your rates bill over a number of years. It is worth being precise about what that is: it is a loan, not a subsidy. It can genuinely help cash flow, and it does not reduce the total.

These schemes open, close and change terms, and availability is entirely local. We do not publish a list of them, for a reason that will be familiar by now: we have not verified any of them, a stale entry would send someone to a scheme that has closed, and a missing entry would tell someone there is no help when there is.

What about tax?

For an owner-occupied home there is no residential tax credit for solar in New Zealand. Rental properties and business premises are a different question and depend on circumstances. An accountant, not a comparison site.

What actually reduces the cost

Since there is no subsidy to chase, the levers are ordinary ones:

• Compare quotes properly, on the same system size and inclusions. The spread between quotes for the same job is usually larger than any subsidy would have been.
• Size the system to what you will use, not to the roof. Capacity you export earns the buy-back rate rather than displacing your retail rate.
